Get Involved in North Carolina
May 1, 2009 and Beyond: What Can I Do??
The marches and demonstrations for immigrants’ rights and workers’ rights in recent years have inspired us tremendously. Whether you are able to join a local event in your area or not, we hope you will consider getting involved in the movement in one or more ways described below.
Si se puede. Yes We Can.
In North Carolina:
Ensure that Higher Education will be available to ALL students:
1. Call your state legislators to say you support access to education for all students. There have been several bills that have been introduced to the NC General Assembly this year that would increase access to higher education for immigrant students, and several that would severely limit access. For summary of these bills, see http://www.adelantenc.org/2009%20bills.doc
Who to call:
-- Your own Representative or Senator. You can find the elected officials that represent you by going to: http://www.ncga.state.nc.us/GIS/RandR07/Home.html
-- Senate President Pro Tempore: Senator Basnight, 919-733-6854
Deputy President Pro Tempore: Senator Dannelly, 919-733-5955
Majority Leader: Senator Rand, 919-733-9892
--House Speaker: Rep. Hackney, 919-733-3451
Speaker Pro Tempore: Rep. Wainwright, 919-733-5995
Majority Leader: Rep. Holliman, 919-715-0873
2. Participate in an upcoming Lobby Day:
The Adelante Coalition will be coordinating lobby days in Raleigh from 9 am - 12:30 pm on May 5, 20, & 28 in order to talk about the importance of education for all students in North Carolina, and in particular the importance of enabling immigrant students to attend NC colleges and universities. Each lobby day will include a brief orientation to lobbying and the Education for All Campaign, visits with elected officials, and a debrief over lunch. We will meet for the orientation at the office of El Pueblo, Inc., 4 N. Blount St. Suite 200 Raleigh, NC 27601 http://www.elpueblo.org/pcontact.html
3. Sign Our Petition
Take a moment to sign on to our petition to show that you support that all students deserve an opportunity to pursue their education. It only takes a moment:
