Durham, NC: Events for May 1
May 1, 2006
1. El Centro Hispano of Durham's Open House/Community Forum at 3:00 pm
2. Re-Imagining May Day: International Workers' Day community forum, 7:00-9:00 pm
On Monday May 1 2006, millions of Latinos and their allies across North Carolina and the United States will participate in a national day of action against HR 4437 and for fair and comprehensive immigration reform. Hundreds of local, state and national organizations are supporting our community’s decision to take action. Our collective goal is to show the vital role of the immigrant labor force and purchase power in the United States. In North Carolina, immigrants contribute over 9 billion dollars per year through the purchase of goods and payment of taxes!
We are sending out a call to action, as all across the state events are planned to unite the Latino community and their allies on this issue. Durham will not be the exception.
We have heard from many members of our community planning to take part in this momentous day. It should be a personal decision for each family to decide how they want to participate, and since many people will stay home from work or school, El Centro Hispano believes that it is important to have a gathering space where people can come together as community.
Therefore, El Centro Hispano will be hosting an open house/community forum on Monday, May 1st starting at 3:00pm, so that Durham residents can share their own stories, express their hopes and desires for our country, and learn more about the current state of immigration today. This event is open to the public, and all are welcome.

Monday, May 1st there will also be a forum 7-9pm at the Friends Meeting House in Durham (404 Alexander Avenue) on what May Day/International Workers' Day, which started in the USA, is and on several working class and popular issues. A panel will discuss May Day history, healthcare, immigration, local labor struggles, fair trade, and family issues. The panel will be followed by smaller discussion groups on what can be done or is being done about these issues. For more information email michael_pollock@yahoo.com or call (919) 544-7397.
